LEE hyun young
In my works I go on imaginary journeys between paradise and earth, paths between clouds and valleys, I create star trails for the eyes. My universe is poetic. Like an inner journey, I invite the viewer on a walk to follow me. The motifs come from memories of my childhood in Korea, my infinite love of painting and traditional material processing. From these three aspects I have constructed my universe. From my past in Korea I keep the memory of the materials and the faith of my ancestors. Rice paper is the outer layer of these memories, enamel dishes their secret symbols. This paper lined the floors of the houses at home. On it were footprints, signs of life, and even then I imagined paintings and landscapes. In France I took this raw material, dissolved it in water, redesigned it to remove its smooth, original side and create an irregular, more vivid texture. I reappropriated the technique of making rice paper to make it more visible and to show my imaginary paths. In order for the papers to leave its colorless silence behind and these tinted worlds, I paint, I draw with Chinese ink, I scatter with Korean pigments.
